This guitar is the first working prototype for the Deluxe II. The Deluxe II was originally designed to be a model in the Korina Collection Series, with only 100 of each model made in late 2011 and early 2012. It was later offered in the Black Ice Collection series with a Swamp Ash body. And finally it is being offered in the Savannah Series. But this is the first working example of the Deluxe II. One of the unique features of the Deluxe II is the "Gibson-style" tune-o-matic bridge. G&L recently decided to sell several of their prototypes they had been keeping in storage. Thunder Grove Music missed the opportunity to snag this one, but we were able to obtain it from the dealer that bought it direct from G&L.
This is equipped with Seymour Duncan pickups: a '59 in the neck position and a Jeff Beck (JB) in the bridge position. The two humbuckers are very distinct and USABLE! They sound great separately and together. The guitar sounds absolutely terrific and plays like a dream. Action is good and the body sustains with a nice resonance. It is extremely versatile and is appropriate for playing clean or high gain...it does it all!
The finish is Honeyburst, with a rosewood fretboard and black headstock. There is a serious ding in the finish on the backside, but this actually adds to the "cool factor" as it was put there by a G&L employee who took the guitar out to test it at a gig! The ding is visible in the pictures. Even though this guitar has been thoroughly tested and played by the engineers at G&L, it is sold as brand new and comes with full factory warranty and certificate of authenticity signed by Mrs. Leo Fender.
The following is G&L's description of the fascinating story behind this particular guitar (taken from the G&L website):

Special Features: During a product planning meeting the discussion of the Korina instruments came up. At this time we had already made the Bluesboy prototype CLF60349 and we were satisfied with that guitar. As we discussed progress of the ASAT Deluxe variant, one of the team suggested we consider making a Korina-bodied model with two humbuckers and another with P-90s, making both more of an authentic blend of Fullerton and Kalamazoo by adding a Tune-O-Matic bridge and stop-bar tailpiece. The inspiration came from our 1998 Custom Creations ASAT Junior standing nearby. The team agreed this would be very cool, so we set to work to prepare CNC code to route an ASAT Deluxe with a Tune-O-Matic bridge.
This guitar is our first completed, fully functional version of what became the ASAT Deluxe II in the Korina Collection. It was built using a three-piece Swamp Ash body as we didn’t want to use any of our limited supply of Korina for an engineering proof-of-concept prototype. The neck for this prototype had been used on another sample a few months earlier, though that guitar was later dismantled, so in the interest of time the team decided to re-use the neck for this prototype. At this point we still had not finalized design details for the ASAT Deluxe II, such as the teardrop pickguard or knobs. Since this is an engineering prototype it was particularly important give it a rigorous testing, so three of the G&L craftsmen took turns taking this guitar out to play gigs. As with any gigging instrument, dings and dents can occur, and this guitar sustained a bit of damage during one of the shows. There’s a finish crack and paint chip along the back edge, but it doesn’t do anything to compromise the tone and playability of this guitar.
This is a one-of-a-kind guitar with a fascinating history, handmade in Fullerton, California. When it's gone, there won't be another. Email with questions.
